The principal challenge of INEXA was the design of a desalination plant that maximizes the energy efficiency, as well as was flexible and modular in its operation. INEXA was awarded with the EPC (“Turn-key”) contract through a local investor in a project set up as a BOT (Build, Operate & Transfer) scheme (https://www.desalination.biz/news/0/Spains-Inexa-to-build-Arab-shipyard-desalination-plant/7698/ ). The end client is ASRY (www.asry.net) established in the Kingdom of Bahrain since 1977 and one of the leading shipyards in the Persian Gulf with more than 5,000 employees and average yearly turnover of 150 million USD.
One of the key decisions taken to execute this project was the use of the full design capabilities of the company to minimize the losses and errors in the assembly and commissioning. Every part of the process, piping and parts of the plant was assembled mechanically as per 3D design and modelling and we are very proud to assure that it was not need to execute any type of pipe welding in the installation works. This mean that all the items (pipe items, supports, pieces of equipment, etc) were manufactured in workshops under controlled conditions avoiding the problems that may rise of doing it in the field (for example contaminations of pipe welding due to extreme conditions of humidity and temperature, very common in the Middle East). These procedures and methodology differentiate INEXA in the market and allow us to keep the highest quality standards of every item, minimizing losses in the commissioning and decreasing installation costs and the need of highly skilled personnel in the field.
In terms of energy efficiency we have reached a very low specific energy consumption ratio in the range of 2.3 – 2.5 kWhr/m3 of treated water for the main RO process. This figure is very significant for a sea water desalination plant in the Middle East.
